Heart of Discovery: Dr. Russ Camp's Retirement Celebration
Took Place: Friday, May 4, 2007
Presidents Dining Room, Lane Student Center
Alumni, faculty, staff and friends of Russ and Norma Camp streamed into the Presidents Dining Room on Friday, May 4, 2007 to celebrate Dr. Russ Camp's 37 years of service to Gordon College. Guests recounted stories of Dr. Camp's encouragement, passion and joy as a professor and friend. Dr. Dick Gross, former president of Gordon College, began our program by recalling Dr. Camp's early years at Gordon, and reminding us that it is the relationship between faculty and students that makes the lasting impact seen in so many of the guests at the party.
Dr. Preston Mason '85 spoke about Dr. Camp's great love of research and shared that his passion for research came from being infected with the "Camp Research Bug." Dr. Dorothy Boorse '87 joyfully recounted her years working with Dr. Camp as a fellow faculty member and shared with us the answers to a "Russ Camp Quiz" (Did you know that the "R." in "Russell R. Camp" stands for Rufus?).
After delicious food and continued testimonies by a number of alumni and friends, Dr. Camp led the crowd in two favorite songs: "DNA, Oh DNA" and "The Microscope Song", accompanied by David Stuart '89. At the close of the evening, President Jud Carlberg announced the continuation of Dr. Camp's legacy at Gordon: the Dr. Russell R. Camp Molecular Cell Biology Laboratory, in the biology wing of the new Ken Olsen Science Center!
