WENHAM, MA—With the start of a new academic year at Gordon College, students and the broader community will again benefit from hearing nationally known speakers address issues such as global slavery, peace-building and how to change the world, really.
Former television reporter Jody Hassett-Sanchez (pictured, top) will discuss her new documentary on the contemporary global slave trade on Thursday, September 9 at 4:30 p.m. in the Ken Olsen Science Center. On September 10, at 10:25 a.m. in A. J. Gordon Memorial Chapel, she will give a convocation lecture called “Telling Stories and Seeking Justice: Making Films That Make a Difference.” Hassett-Sanchez’s visit is sponsored by Gordon’s Center for Christian Studies.
To celebrate the International Day of Peace, internationally known scholar and peacemaker Dr. David Steele will discuss faith-based approaches to peacemaking in a violent world, Monday, September 20 at 10:25 a.m. in A. J. Gordon Memorial Chapel. As part of the launching of Gordon’s new Peace and Conflict Transformation Minor, Steele will also visit classes and participate in a panel discussion that afternoon at 4:30 p.m. in the Ken Olsen Science Center. The Department of Social Work and Sociology is sponsoring his visit.
On September 30, Gordon alumnus James Davison Hunter (pictured, second from top), LaBrosse-Levinson Distinguished Professor of Religion, Culture and Social Theory at the University of Virginia, will address the subject, “To Change the World” at 4:30 p.m. in MacDonald Auditorium in the Ken Olsen Science Center. Hunter’s visit is sponsored by Gordon’s Jerusalem and Athens Forum.
Author, pastor and highly sought-after lecturer Brian McLaren (pictured, third from top) will join Mabiala Kenzo, professor of theology at Ambrose Seminary, for a joint lecture on post-colonialism on October 21 at 7:30 p.m. in MacDonald Auditorium. McLaren will also give an address, “On Being a Three-Faced, One-Hearted Christian,” in A. J. Gordon Memorial Chapel, September 22 at 10:25 a.m. Their visit is sponsored by the Center for Christian Studies.
Dinesh D’Souza (pictured, fourth from top), former White House domestic policy analyst, will debate Bart Ehrman, James A. Gray Distinguished Professor of Religious Studies at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, on the topic “Theodicy, Suffering and Christianity” on November 11 at 7:30 p.m. in A.J. Gordon Memorial Chapel. Their visit is sponsored by the Center for Christian Studies.
On November 16, Pulitzer Prize-winning author Paul Harding (pictured, bottom)will discuss his novel, Tinkers, at 7:30 p.m. in the A.J. Gordon Memorial Chapel, with a book-signing prior to that in the Ken Olsen Science Center at 6:00 p.m. His talk is cosponsored by Gordon College, the Hamilton-Wenham Public Library and the Beverly Public Library.
