WENHAM, MA—For nearly 41 years John Beauregard of Danvers, MA, has taken care of some aspect of Gordon College. From organizing library resources to coaching student athletes and most recently to overseeing the College archives—including the A.J. Gordon Heritage Project—Beauregard has had a pastoral presence across campus in a variety of ways.
But on Friday, January 29, he will officially retire, leaving behind a legacy that surely could qualify for its own shelf in the Gordon College Archives.
Born January 6, 1932, Beauregard graduated from Gordon College in 1953 with a bachelor’s degree in philosophy. He went on to receive his Master’s of Divinity from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary in Wenham and entered a pastoral career in local churches. He went back to school at the University of Maine to receive his master’s in library science before returning to Gordon.
In 1969, he was appointed assistant professor of bibliography and the head of technical services at Gordon. Two years later he was promoted to associate professor of bibliography and assistant director of what was then known as Winn Library. He achieved full professor in 1972, around the same time he began coaching ice hockey at Gordon as the campus began to grow and change.
“John’s life and service parallels so many important developments of Gordon,” said President R. Judson Carlberg. “He has served our community with integrity, sincerity and loyalty in ways we greatly appreciate. And he has made an enormous contribution to the College archives, maintaining the crucial documents, artifacts and history of our institution and region.”
Beauregard and his wife Georgia were married for 49 years and raised three sons and a daughter. Some of their grandchildren attended Gordon, including his grandson, Max, who graduated last spring.
When Georgia passed away in 2001, Beauregard continued to work full time at Gordon and was appointed College archivist in 2003. Though he has worked on a part time status ever since, he insisted on maintaining a full time work schedule because of his love for Gordon. He married longtime Gordon employee Beverly Meservey, who retired from the Registrar’s Office this past fall.
“The Gordon College Archives contain a wealth of historic material, including important documents tracing the growth of the evangelical movement, and they’re available to the public in large part because of John’s expertise,” said Dan Tymann, executive vice president at Gordon and John’s most recent boss. “John’s service to our community on so many levels has been extraordinary. We’re grateful for his many gifts and wish him an equally meaningful retirement.”
A special reception for John’s contributions will be held on Wednesday, January 27, in the Ken Olsen Science Center on the Wenham campus.
