Provost Mark Sargent Recognized for 10 Years of Service at Gordon College

WENHAM, MA-Dr. Mark Sargent was recently recognized for 10 years of service as provost of Gordon College. A resident of South Hamilton, Sargent arrived at Gordon in 1996 after serving three years as provost and vice president of academic affairs at Spring Arbor College in Michigan. As provost, he supervises the learning programs of the college-academics, student life, chapel and athletics.

In his post at Gordon he has been responsible for hiring many outstanding faculty from around the world and has overseen the addition of three masters degrees, new undergraduate majors in communications, finance, German and the theatre arts, and new interdisciplinary concentrations in biotechnology, neuroscience and East Asian studies. During Sargent's tenure the College has also developed overseas studies programs in several places including Belize, Italy and South Africa, as well as two urban programs in Boston and Lynn. He also spearheaded the implementation of the "Critical Loyalty Project," an interdisciplinary academic initiative that focuses on vocational and leadership development in students.

Sargent writes and speaks on American literature, history and higher education. He has received scholarly awards from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Colonial Society of Massachusetts and the Mark Twain Circle of America. A native of California, he holds degrees from the University of California at Santa Barbara (B.A.) and Claremont Graduate School (M.A, Ph.D.), and was a Fulbright scholar and lecturer at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. Last February he was elected as national chair of the chief academic officers for the Council of Independent Colleges. His wife, Arlyne, is the international student advisor at Gordon College.
