WENHAM, MA--Over 50 current juniors and seniors are volunteering their time this week as part of the Gordon College Orientation staff, eager to welcome new and returning students to the College’s official moving-in day, Friday, August 21. From mopping or rearranging to planning or serving in whatever ways they can, the volunteer crew is part of a coordinated campus effort to help usher in the 2009-2010 academic year, the 120th in the College’s history of providing young women and men with a nationally recognized Christian liberal arts education.

In addition to offering 466 classes across 37 majors, the College has planned a year of exceptional opportunities for the students: world-renowned speakers, free musical concerts, faculty-coordinated art exhibits, a year of comedy in the theatre (with “pay what you can” tickets), exciting athletic competitions, the Provost film series, numerous service and ministry opportunities throughout the North Shore and North America, and several campus-wide special events including conferences, variety shows and seasonal festivities.

Anticipating the 120th celebration, many members of Gordon’s faculty and administration took time out of their preparation to offer personal words for the incoming and returning students. Here are just a few:

“My wife, Jan, and I look forward to welcoming--as we do each year--our new students and their families to campus. It’s an exciting time for us because we know this is an extraordinary opportunity for these students to grow with some of the best Christian scholars in the country. Gordon is a special place with a history that reinforces the tenets of our corporate faith and more than prepares young people for their respective callings. Welcome, students! You are the reason we are here.” —Dr. R. Judson Carlberg, President of Gordon College

“Gordon College began as a training institute to prepare students to fill roles of service and leadership in God’s world. Today, 120 years later, that mission continues. It is my prayer that this year will mark a season of exceptional growth for you as you prepare to take up your role in fulfilling God’s mission in the world.”  —Dr. Greg Carmer, Dean of the Chapel

“Welcome to 255 Grapevine . . . a place where faith-walkers work out. ‘What is faith? It is the confident assurance that what we hope for is going to happen. It is the evidence of things we cannot see.’ God and a whole lot of good folks at Gordon are committed to helping you stretch and grow your faith, your mind, your view of this world. Hope big. God’s bigger.” —Jan Carlberg, First Lady of Gordon College

“Fear not--for you shall know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Perfect love--love of Christ, love of neighbor, love of truth--casts out fear.” —Dr. Dan Russ, Academic Dean and Director of the Center for Christian Studies

“This semester we hope you will . . . make friends, read classics, challenge the status quo, serve others, reconsider assumptions, expand your horizons, grow in God. Welcome to Gordon!” —Valerie Buchanan, Director of the Office of Community Engagement

“Greetings to future alumni and their parents at the start of the 120th year of Gordon College! The foundation of founder Adoniram Judson Gordon’s vision has been strengthened and enlarged by thousands of faculty, staff and students who shared that vision and worked to create in Gordon a community of men and women whose Christian faith is fully integrated into what they know and what they do. I am thankful for being part of such a community as this and pray that you will both benefit from and contribute to it in ways that you could never ask or imagine.”—Nancy Mering, Director of Alumni and Parent Relations
