Gordon College and General Electric Team Up to Expose Kids to The Life Sciences

WENHAM, MA-On Wednesday, June 14, 100 fourth graders from the Ford Elementary School in Lynn will flood Gordon's North Shore campus for a "Science Buddy" field trip through the Gordon woods to help provide first-hand exposure to life science. Electric Insurance Grant, part of General Electric has funded this event in an effort to expose inner city kids to environmental studies. G.E. will provide 40 engineer volunteers to work directly with the kids to help contribute positive role models for the students.

The students will study insects by working with crickets, plant seeds, experiment with ants, work on a native plant garden and learn about exotic species. Dr. Dorothy Boorse, professor of biology, will lead the trip. "I am thrilled to provide hands-on experience for these young students. Our ponds and several hundred acre campus provide a unique opportunity for students to learn in a real life environmental classroom," says Boorse. "I hope this experience will give the students a better appreciation for science and teach them how they can environmentally make a difference." Dr. Boorse is an expert in marine ecology and biology and will take the students on a walking tour through the Gordon woods.

General Electric, as part of their contribution, recently donated 25 books for teachers to use that will compliment the science curriculum at the Lynn elementary school.

This cooperative event between Gordon College, Gordon's Lynn Initiative and the Center for Christian Studies, and General Electric will continue for 2 days in the fall when they will repeat the "Science Buddy" field trip for two other groups of students from the City of Lynn.
