WENHAM, MA--February was a successful athletics month for the Gordon College Fighting Scots, with several strong accolades and achievements.
Nearing the end of the long winter season, Coach Mike Schauer and the men's basketball team clinched third place heading into the play-offs by beating undefeated University of New England Wednesday, Feb. 18. This upset for the UNE team and fans set the Scots up 8-4 in the conference, 18-6 overall.
Senior David Flight (pictured, top right) has recently been named the program's all-time leader in wins at Gordon College. "No player has ever won more games wearing a Gordon College men's basketball uniform than David Flight," Coach Schauer said. "Currently, we are 77-28 in David's time here. No player has ever been more successful in this program than David Flight."
Above the court, on the indoor track, are many other successful athletes, two of whom qualified for the NCAA Division III New England Championships at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Junior Emily Bauder (pictured, right) and freshmen Marty Maloney (pictured, bottom right), were both first-timers qualifying for indoor track, both running their personal bests to get to the championships.
Bauder qualified in the 200 with a 27.87 at the Boston University Valentine Invite. Track Coach John Molvar said, "Bauder really came through when she needed to, getting a great start and running very aggressively the whole way. It was the first time she has ever qualified for the indoor New Englands."
Maloney qualified by breaking the 1000 school record as well as his personal record by three seconds at the BU Valentine Invite with 2:35:67. "Maloney is having an awesome season and is getting better each week; this was obviously the best race of his life," Coach Molvar said. "He became the first Gordon male ever to individually qualify for the Indoor New Englands."
Not only was Maloney the first Gordon male ever to have qualified for the Indoor New Englands, but this was his first time running indoor track. "I am from Minnesota and we do not have indoor track, so this was my first year--but I was very pleased to have qualified."
For Maloney, along with many other Gordon athletes, track is just one way to express their Christian faith. "Running is such an incredible way to praise God," said Maloney. "God gave me two legs, so running is a way I get to show my gratitude by using those gifts."
With spring sports just around the corner, winter athletes are in their final weeks preparing for playoffs and championships. Hard work has paid off, and sets up the spring season with both women's and men's lacrosse teams. On March 3, the women's team plays Bates in Lewiston, Maine at 5 p.m., an on March 4, men's lacrosse will play Springfield College at Gordon at 4 p.m.
