WENHAM, MA - Gordon College's First Lady, Jan Carlberg, known for her storytelling and writing, is now navigating the world of audio podcasting. Daily readings from her devotional book The Hungry Heart (Hendrickson 2005) are now available at  Gordon on iTunes U. Listeners can also access audio podcasts of chapel and convocation speakers, student projects and other highlighted speakers through Gordon's iTunes U site.

The Hungry Heart's one- to two-minute readings explore a different Old Testament passage for each day of the year. "God has a hungry heart for his children, and I wrote this devotional to show that God moves in the lives of small and little-known people living in obscure and small towns," said Carlberg. Carlberg chose passages that may be less familiar to many, but which strongly exhibit the character of God. "I've met so many people who are afraid of the Old Testament," she said. "But God reveals so much about Himself through the stories of His people in a way that still resounds in the context of today."

Students have responded positively as they've found the easily accessible readings helpful amidst busy schedules. Downloadable for free on iTunes, they can be carried on any compatible device. "I appreciate that the president's wife is taking time to reach out to students in this way," said senior Kelsey Klerowski, a communication arts major. "Oftentimes her words are exactly what I need to hear for that day."

As well as authoring The Hungry Heart and The Welcome Song: and other Stories from a Place Called Home, Carlberg speaks at churches, colleges, seminars and conferences across the country. Her knack at the microphone isn't a surprise as speech was one of her concentrations at Wheaton College. "I wanted to record her devotional because she has such a great voice for this," said Jo Kadlecek, senior writer for Gordon College communications and producer of the podcast. "Her authenticity shines through."

"My hope is that these Old Testament stories might encourage and come alive to people even more through listening to the podcast," said Carlberg.
