WENHAM, MA-Beginning the first week of February until commencement in May, Gordon College will host several nationally recognized speakers and authors discussing a variety of current issues and topics. Most events are free and open to the public.
On Friday, February 6, Gordon's Center for Christian Studies (CCS) will host Dinesh D'Souza, author of What's So Great About Christianity? His talk, "Islam, Christianity and the War on Terror" will take place at 10:25 a.m. in the A. J. Gordon Memorial Chapel. The New York Times Magazine named D'Souza one of America's most influential conservative thinkers; Newsweek cited him as one of the country's most prominent Asian Americans.
Monday, February 9 at 10:25 a.m. in the in A.J. Gordon Memorial Chapel, Dr. Timothy Johnson, Medical Editor ABC News, will talk on "Health Care Reform 2009" for the annual Crum Lecture.
Wednesday, February 11 at 10:25 a.m. in the in A.J. Gordon Memorial Chapel, Dr. Richard Cizik, Senior Fellow for the United Nations Foundation, will join Eric Chivian, co-recipient of the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize, professor of psychiatry and director or the Center for Health and the Global Environment at Harvard Medical School, for a conversation on science and faith.
Friday, February, 13 at 10:25 a.m. in the in A. J. Gordon Memorial Chapel, Rabbi David Gordis, President Emeritus of Hebrew College, will discuss, "A First-Century Education: How Jesus and the Apostles Would Have Learned." The talk will be sponsored by CCS.
Thursday, February 19, Dr. William Edgar, professor of apologetics at Westminster Theological Seminary, will discuss, "The Threat of Culture" for the Annual Barrington Seminar IV in the Macdonal Auditorium of the Ken Olsen Science Center. A CCS-sponsored reception begins at 4:00 followed by a lecture/discussion at 4:30 p.m. On Friday, February 20, Edgar, who is also a jazz pianist, will speak on "Heaven in a Nightclub" at 10:25 a.m. in the in A. J. Gordon Memorial Chapel.
Thursday, March 19, Frederica Mathewes-Green, author The Illumined Heart: The Ancient Christian Path of Transformation will discuss "Orthodoxy & Evangelical Renewal" in the Ken Olsen Science Center's Macdonald Auditorium, with a CCS-sponsored reception preceding the event at 4:00 p.m. Mathewes-Green, who is also a film critic and columnist, will continue her exploration of "Orthodoxy and Evangelical Renewal," Friday, March 20, at 10:25 a.m. in the in A. J. Gordon Memorial Chapel.
On Tuesday, April 7, Gordon College along with the Hamilton-Wenham Public Library Community Read Partnership will host best selling novelist Katherine Patterson as she reads from and discusses her young adult historic novel, Bread and Roses, Too. Patterson, who is also the author of Bridge To Terabithia, will lecture at 7:30 p.m. at the A. J. Memorial Chapel, preceded by a Meet the Author Reception at 6:00 p.m. in the Ken Olsen Science Center. Tickets for general admission are $10.00, $5.00 student admission.
On Thursday, April 16 from 4:00 -6:00 p.m. J. Bucziszewski, professor of political philosophy at the University of Texas at Austin, will lecture on "Natural Law and Politics." The event, sponsored by Gordon's Jerusalem and Athens Forum, will be held Ken Olsen Science Center's Macdonald Auditorium.
On Saturday, May 16, 10:00 a.m., Dr. David Batstone, professor of theology and religious studies at the University of San Francisco and founder of Not for Sale Campaign, will offer the Gordon College commencement address. Batstone began his "career" guarding Salvadoran pastors and literacy teachers from death squads. He was a member of the founding team of Business 2.0 magazine and is the founder of social venture firm, Right Reality. He writes regularly in USA Weekend edition as "America's Ethics Guru," and has traveled the world investigating the Slave Trade before writing Not For Sale, the book associated with this campaign.
