Gordon College Awarded for Its Excellence In Recycling

WENHAM, MA- Recently, MassRecycle announced Gordon College as one of the 2008 Green Binny award recipients for its excellence in reusing, restoring and recycling. The Green Binny program awards individuals and organizations for excellence in contributing to the recycling efforts of the state. "Since 1989, we at Gordon have tried to be at the cutting edge with recycling and environmental concerns," says Mark Stowell, assistant director of physical plant and the leader of recycling on campus. "We didn't need an award to keep doing that but it's nice to be recognized for these efforts."

Last year alone, Gordon recycled 130 tons of materials--31 percent of all its trash. "We are currently recycling as many products as we can," said Stowell. "The obvious thing is to get more people to do it on campus. This year we started 'single-stream' recycling, which allows people to throw all their recyclables into one place without sorting, making it easier for everyone. Hopefully that will improve our percentages."

Stowell also heads up the Restore Creation Program, a campus-wide initiative to encourage faculty, staff and students to recycle and be good stewards of the environment. In April, this program has a Restore Creation Day that coincides with Earth Day where faculty, staff and students have the opportunity to participate in a myriad of activities including planting trees and flowers, adopting a highway, sitting in on a panel discussion on the environment, visiting incineration and recycling plants, looking at hybrid biodiesel vehicles on display on campus, and more.

MassRecycle, according to its website, is a "statewide coalition of individuals, governments, businesses, institutions and non-profit organizations dedicated to promoting and realizing the vital environmental, social and economic benefits created by reducing, reusing, and recycling waste materials, and by increasing the utilization of recycled products." The Green Binny awards are given to those who have made noteworthy efforts in both recycling and a significant reduction in waste.
