Gordon Graduate Receives Fulbright Scholarship to Study and Research Abroad

WENHAM, MA­­­­-Gordon College recently announced that alumna, Emily Fisher, was awarded a Fulbright scholarship, having received a research grant to study and research in Norway, where she will attend the University of Bergen. Fisher has a bachelor's degree in psychology.

"The Fulbright Fellowship program is a highly competitive national program where Gordon undergraduates and graduates compete in a pool of applicants, which includes a heavy percentage of graduate-level students," says Cliff Hersey, Dean for Global Education. "Having even one student selected points to the extraordinarily strong academic preparation of students at Gordon."

Fisher, of Red Hook, New York, is currently working at Joslin Diabetes Center providing administrative support for two diabetes research labs. During her Fulbright year, she will be placed by the Fulbright Commission in Norway, where she plans to study health promotion philosophy and research methodology at the University of Bergen as part of a two-year master's degree program. During this time she will be working with the Research Center for Health Promotion, located in Bergen, and investigating current health trends and attitudes in Norwegian adolescents. Upon her return, she plans to use her Fulbright research to continue her studies in educating U.S. adolescents in preventative health practices, and help with the development and incorporation of better nutrition and exercise guidelines into current programs targeted at adolescents in the United States.

Among her other achievements, Fisher was granted the Dean's Scholarship at Gordon College from 2001-2005. She also co-authored and presented research at the Association for Moral Education Conference in 2004, and presented a poster on Harvard Mysell Psychiatry Research Day in 2006.

Fisher worked with Pamela Thuswaldner, adjunct German instructor and the campus representative for Fulbright Scholars at Gordon College, to complete her application. "Emily is personally committed to and passionate about her project in guiding U.S. teens," says Thuswaldner. "Her passion for the project spoke for itself and echoed through her application. It was a pleasure working with her to achieve this step in her overall goal." 

The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and is the largest U.S. international exchange program offering opportunities for students, scholars, and professionals to undertake international graduate study, advanced research, university teaching, and teaching in elementary and secondary schools worldwide. The 2009-10 Fulbright application process deadline is Friday, August 1, 2008. Funding for 800 American students in 140 countries is available.
