Gordon's New May Term to Hold Classes In Boston, Wenham and Around The North Shore, Open to All

WENHAM, MA-The Global Education Office at Gordon College will launch its first May Term session this year, offering students eight venue-driven, experimental courses taught over an accelerated three-week time frame. Classes will begin May 19 and go until June 6. Classes will be taught on Gordon's campus, in Boston or areas around the North Shore.

Classes include:

  • Power and Justice: Perspectives on Political Order, taught by Tim Sherratt and Paul Brink, political studies; class to be held in Wenham.

  • "Can't We All Just Get Along?": Introduction to Conflict and Reconciliation Studies in Communities of Faith, taught by Dr. Judith Oleson, social work and John Sarrouf, theatre; class to be held in Wenham.

  • Three Dorothys: A Conversation Between Dorothy Sayers, Dorothy Day and Dorothy Parker, taught by Jo Kadlecek, communications; class to be held in Wenham.

  • The Philosophy of Christianity and the Environment, taught by Brian Glenney, philosophy; class to be held in Wenham, field trip to Concord, Mass.

  • From Page To Stage: Regional Theater in Boston, taught by Norm Jones and Dawn Sarrouf, theatre; class to be held in Wenham, field work in Boston.

  • Regional History In Cemetery Form, taught by David Goss, history; class to be held in Boston.

  • Intercultural Christology: Understanding the Person and Work of Christ in Cultural Context, taught by Craig McMullen, director of Gordon in Boston program; class to be held in Boston.

  • Marine Biology Institute, taught by Chuck Blend, biology; class to be held in Wenham, field work in various locations across the state.

Cliff Hersey, dean of the Global Education program at Gordon, is excited about this new opportunity for students. "The May Term gives us an opportunity to think outside the box, crafting courses that might not fit the usual structured curriculum. Faculty teaching these courses were encouraged to think about ways in which the pedagogy of instruction could be taken outside the classroom into walking tours, hands-on workshops, trips and multiple locations." Gordon's May Term stands out from those of other schools on the North Shore or in the Boston area, according to Hersey. "A lot of colleges offer accelerated programs, but Gordon's program is different in that the College offers a unique approach to knowledge within the context of Christian faith. There are very few colleges in the Boston area that consistently make that claim."

Students from other colleges are also invited to enroll-including non-traditional students, students from colleges and universities in the Boston area and recent high school graduates. "We wanted to see if we could reach beyond the Gordon student population and tap into the vast network of both traditional and non-traditional students in the Boston area," says Hersey. "We hope that offering this small list of course options will be the start of a greater impact in years to come."

Classes will be held at Gordon's Wenham campus and in various parts of Boston; the biology class will be held in many different marine/coastal locations in Massachusetts.
