How to Choose a Presidential Candidate Using Mathematics

WENHAM, MA-The Departments of Mathematics and Political Studies at Gordon College will hold a presentation entitled, "What Makes your Vote Matter?" a discussion about math and politics. The event will take place on Tuesday, April 8 from 1:15 p.m. to 2:50 p.m. in the Jenks Library, room 237.

Dr. Karl-Dieter Crisman, professor of mathematics, will present the different ways voters might choose a presidential candidate using mathematics. Also included in the discussion will be Dr. Paul Brink and Dr. Ruth Melkonian-Hoover, from the Gordon College Political Studies Department, responding from a political science viewpoint on the insights of math in a political election.

"Simple mathematics has great power to tell us what is--and isn't--fair about our voting systems," says Crisman. "Tuesday's event will focus on this year's tight race, and where our use of partisan primaries--as opposed to open primaries used in municipal elections--could change who our next president is."
