WENHAM, MA - This year Jack Good, member of Gordon's class of 1966, received the 2008 Enduring Hero award at the Sixth Annual American Red Cross Community Heroes Breakfast held at the Danversport Yacht Club. The prestigious award is given each year to one outstanding individual who has a significant history of making a difference in the community through his or her professional and/or volunteer activities.
Hundreds in the yacht club stood and filled the hall with thunderous applause as Good walked to the podium to accept his award. Anthony Silva, co-host of WBZ News-Radio 1030's highly rated "Afternoon News," hosted the event and read a heartfelt tribute to the community activist, which was followed by a short film honoring Good, his hard work, and his many contributions and achievements.
Good has been giving back to the North Shore community his entire life. Raised by a family that taught him the value of selflessness, he has a lengthy list of contributions and service to the local community. These contributions have included serving as National Chairman for the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy, the Chairman of the Board for the American Heart Association Massachusetts Affiliate, the President of the Beverly Rotary Club, and Vice President of the North Shore United Way
In addition to sitting on various boards and committees on a weekly basis, Good, along with his family, has accompanied Santa on Christmas morning to visit patients at Beverly Hospital for the past 25 years.
Good currently serves as the Executive Vice President of Beverly National Bank. His other professional positions have been at Gordon College and Beverly Hospital/Northeast Health Systems, where he served as Vice President of Community Relations, Marketing, and Development. He is married to fellow alum Sue (Butterfield) '66, and lives in Essex, Massachusetts
The Red Cross tribute states: "By any estimation, Jack has been a community exemplar of integrity, humility, and compassion. He is an example we should all strive to emulate. The variety and power of his influence in the community is to be celebrated and, lucky for us, will not let up anytime soon. This is why Jack Good is our 2008 Enduring Hero."
Also honored at the celebration was Ruby (Gould) Bowles '71. Of Bowles, the tribute states: "Ruby was born with cerebral palsy and was severely burned in an accidental fire as a teen. She has overcome these disabilities with grace and dignity to become an active volunteer of several church groups, more notably, the First Baptist Church of Beverly, as well as being an active member of her community."
