WENHAM, MA-Gordon College is pleased to welcome the Adams Foundation Piano Recital Series to its campus in Wenham, Massachusetts, for two performances on March 8 and April 12. Sponsored by the Adams Family Foundation of Santa Barbara, California, the series brings pianists of international caliber to chamber music venues throughout the United States.
Duo-pianists Richard and John Contiguglia will inaugurate the Adams Series at Gordon on March 8. Ian Hobson will perform on April 12. Other performing artists in the series include: Jon Nakamatsu, Ursula Oppens, Ann Schein, James Tocco, Simone Dinnerstein, Joseph Kalichstein, Jeanne Stark-Iochmans, Steven Mayer and Robert DeGaetano. Since its inception, and through the 2007-08 season, the Adams Foundation Piano Recital Series will have made possible 148 recitals by 14 pianists in 34 communities in 21 states.
"We are delighted to have been selected as the Boston area host for this important recital series," said Thomas Brooks, chair of Gordon's music department. "One of the key elements of these events is the art and intimacy of the piano recital in a smaller chamber music setting where audience members are closer to the performer. The Adams Series is seeking to return the piano recital to its roots as an intimate musical evening, and Gordon College is honored to be a local partner in this national endeavor."
Richard and John Contiguglia, who also coordinate the series, are identical twins and considered among the most acclaimed and versatile piano duos in the world today. Critic Edward Tatnall Canby called the Contiguglias "the most profoundly musical pair of piano virtuosi of this century." Byron Belt, of Newhouse News Services, says they are "foremost among today's duo-pianists." Their program on March 8 will include works by Franz Liszt, Claude Debussy, Franz Schubert and Ludwig van Beethoven.
Ian Hobson is a musician of tremendous versatility who has earned an international reputation as a pianist, conductor and teacher. His programs consistently demonstrate a repertoire that spans the centuries and demands an extraordinary command of styles and scholarly vision, in addition to great keyboard prowess.
