WENHAM, MA-The latest exhibit in the Gallery in Barrington Center for the Arts at Gordon College To The Least of These features a selection of artwork by Gordon College faculty and alumni. A silent auction will take place throughout the course of the exhibition. Proceeds will benefit the artists and nonprofit organization Heifer International. The opening reception is Saturday, December 1, 2007 from 4 - 6 p.m. and the exhibit dates are Monday, November 26 - Saturday, December 7, 2007.
Bruce Herman is the Gallery director and curator of the art show. "This is an important inaugural exhibition of what we hope will be a periodic Alumni and Faculty show in Gordon's Gallery at Barrington Center for the Arts," he explained. "In the future I'm hoping that we can collaborate with Montserrat Faculty and Alumni, and possibly a whole North Shore consortium of art programs to raise awareness and funding for worthy causes like Heifer." Heifer International, a nonprofit organization based in Arizona, works with communities to end hunger and poverty and care for the earth by supplying families with livestock, like cows or goats, that will provide them with food for years to come.
Herman, an artist himself, is currently the Lothlórien Distinguished Chair in the Fine Arts at Gordon College. He has been showcased in over 55 exhibitions in eleven major U.S. cities and has had his work shown in five different countries, including England, Italy, Russia, Canada, and Israel. He will be donating six pieces to the auction. These semi abstract landscape paintings are meditations on Psalm 19, which focuses on the beauty and majesty of Creation. Herman selected this theme because it is deeply related to Heifer international's land and agriculture-based help of poor, undeveloped countries.
Tanja Butler, associate professor of Art at Gordon, will also have several of her pieces on display and up for auction at the event. She is a painter and liturgical artist and has had her work displayed in many solo and group exhibitions across the United States. Her work is included in the Armand Hammer Collection of Art (CA), the Vatican Museum of Contemporary Religious Art in Rome, Italy, the Portland Museum of Art (ME), the DeCordova Museum (MA), and the Boston Public Library.
Other Gordon faculty members featured in To The Least of These include Jim Zingarelli, professor of Visual Arts and Sue Trent, adjunct professor of Art. This event is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday - Saturday, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m.
