WENHAM, MA-The latest exhibit in the Gallery in Barrington Center for the Arts at Gordon College Approaching the Liminal features a selection of paintings, constructions and reliquary objects by Susan Heideman, painter and professor at Smith College. The opening reception is Saturday, October 20, 2007 from 4 - 6 p.m. and the exhibit dates are Monday, October 22 - Friday, November 16, 2007.

Heideman's work has always emerged from the close observation of nature. Currently she is engaged in creating large-scale oil paintings that explore the phenomenon of biomorphic forms acting upon one another with relentless energy.

"In Approaching the Liminal Heideman's paintings speak out of the preconscious realm of dreams and the primordial: a physical, emotional and spiritual realm where things invisibly come into being, change, grow and die-just below the threshold of perception," says Bruce Herman, director of the Gallery at Barrington Center for the Arts at Gordon."To paint what cannot really be seen is a feat-but this seems to be the very thing Heideman attempts and it is with great pleasure that we host this important exhibition."

Heideman has exhibited in New York and throughout New England. Her work is represented in public collections including the Rose Art Museum, the DeCordova Museum, the Bryn Mawr Collection, the Boston Public Library, and the Miami Hilton. In 1981 she was commissioned to create a seven-by-nine foot painting that now hangs in the lobby of the Merck Pharmaceutical Research Laboratory just outside of Philadelphia. She holds a B.A. from the Boston University School of Fine Arts and a M.F.A. from Indiana University and teaches painting, drawing, and watercolor at Smith College.

This event is free and open to the public. Gallery hours are Monday - Saturday, 9 a.m. - 7 p.m. For more information on Approaching the Liminal or to request photos of Heideman's artwork, please contact Ashley Hopkins at 978.867.4569 or e-mail . You can also visit http://www.gordon.edu/gallery.
