Gordon College Celebrates its 115th Commencement with Guest Speaker Dr. Lauren F. Winner

WENHAM, MA-The 115th Commencement ceremony at Gordon College will take place on Saturday, May 19, 2007 with special guest speaker Dr. Lauren Winner, the highly acclaimed author of Girl Meets God, and Mudhouse Sabbath. This year an estimated 384 students will receive bachelor's degrees in the liberal arts and sciences and approximately 20 will receive master's degrees in education and music education from Gordon.

"Earlier this year Dr. Winner spoke to the entire student body at Gordon College and was extremely well received for her ability to connect with the students on challenging topics like religion, relationships and sexuality," said R. Judson Carlberg, president of Gordon College. "At Commencement she will address the senior class as they prepare for roles in the work force in medical fields, social sciences, missions and post graduate education and will likely reflect on her personal experiences as a writer."

Dr. Winner was the former book editor for the website Beliefnet, an independent multi-faith online community designed to help meet religious and spiritual human needs. She has appeared on PBS's Religion and Ethics Newsweekly and has written for The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post Book World, Publishers Weekly, Christianity Today and The Christian Century. Her essays have also been included in The Best Christian Writing 2000, 2002, 2004 and 2006. Dr. Winner holds degrees from Columbia University and Cambridge University and recently received her doctorate in the history of American religion.

The Commencement ceremony will be held in the Bennett Athletic Center gymnasium due to inclement weather. This event will only be open to ticketed individuals (each senior was given five tickets for such an alternative arrangement).

Other highlights of the 115th Commencement weekend include a Baccalaureate service on the evening of Friday, May 18. This ticketed-only nondenominational Christian service will feature a special farewell address by Senior Minister for Boston's Park Street Church, Dr. Gordon F. Hugenberger.
