Alister Mcgrath Gives Inaugural Tak Yan Lee Endowed Lecture On Science and Faith

Alister McGrath

On April 7, 2014 the Center for Faith and Inquiry at Gordon College welcomed Alister McGrath, recently appointed the Andreas Idreos Professorship of Science and Religion at Oxford University. He was previously Professor of Theology, Ministry and Education, and Head of the Centre for Theology, Religion and Culture in the Department of Education and Professional Studies at King’s College, London, as well as Senior Research Fellow, Harris Manchester College, University of Oxford.

He delivered the inaugural Tak Yan Lee Endowed Lecture on Science and Faith. McGrath’s talk was titled, “Science, Faith, and God: Enriching our Vision of Faith, Meeting Cultural Challenges.”

“Alister McGrath is one of the leading Protestant scholars in the world, and one highly learned in both science and theology. He is a wonderful person to inaugurate this lecture. I’m sure he will give us much to think about,” said Tal Howard, Director of the Center for Faith and Inquiry at Gordon College, which hosts the lecture.

The Tak Yan Lee lecture will annually bring to Gordon College a topnotch Christian scholar to explore topics at the intersection of faith, science, and culture.

A prolific writer and public theologian, McGrath recently gave the Boyle Lectures, the United Kingdom’s premier annual public lecture in science and religion. He also gave the prestigious Gifford Lectures in 2009. Initially a student of the natural sciences, McGrath turned to the study of theology and intellectual history, while occasionally becoming engaged in broader cultural debates about the rationality and relevance of the Christian faith. He has a long-standing interest in educational issues, and has developed a series of theological textbooks that are widely used throughout the world. As a former atheist, McGrath is respectful yet critical of the atheist movement. In recent years, he has been especially interested in the emergence of “scientific atheism.”

This was the first in a series of annual lectures at Gordon College made possible by the generosity of Raymond Lee, in honor of his father, Tak Yan Lee.
