Artists Head to NYC for Popup Installation and MOMA Exhibition Opening

New York, NY—On Friday morning, a team of Gordon students will head to New York City for a private observation in the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) the day before a new exhibit opens. But this invitation-only, back-stage access is more than an opportunity for these Gordon students to observe curators and gallery professionals at one of the most impressive art museums in the nation. It also begins their three-day journey of networking with artists and city officials, designing a one-day pop-up installation in a NYC gallery dedicated to their show, and a celebration of the arts when two faculty members whose work was recently accepted into the permanent collection of MOMA see their work featured in the MOMA exhibition  "A Collection of Ideas," which opens Saturday, February 15.

Under the artistic direction of Peter Morse '10, manager of Gordon's Barrington Center for the Arts, students will partner with the Accessible Icon Project (AIP)—an international effort to update the International Symbol of Access—and create a one-day exhibition titled "ACCESS." Morse (curator of the show) and the students will work throughout the morning and afternoon of February 15 in time for their 5 p.m. opening at Ludlow Studios. "ACCESS will explore issues of accessibility, as interpreted by the icon itself," said Morse. "It will include artwork by artists from within the disability arts community and feature interactive opportunities, such as AIP co-founder and Gordon faculty member Brian Glenney's Kromophon—a sensory-substitution device that utilizes technology to convert visual imagery into noise for the visually impaired." ACCESS will be open to the public from 5 to 10 p.m. Ludlow Studios is located at 40 Ludlow Street in New York's Lower East Side neighborhood.

As a wrap-up to the weekend, volunteers from the Accessible Icon Project and Gordon representatives  are organizing #RushtheMOMA216—a social media invitation to meet the artists and receive free admission to the MOMA (quantity limited) on Sunday, February 16 starting at 11 a.m. to see the AIP icon on display.
