Saluting the Troops

Danielle Moen saluting with father Dan Moen ’04 (Chaplain (CPT), Sasha (Massand) Moen ’01, and their children, Daniella and Hannah, were at Dan’s deployment ceremony at Fort Drum, New York, on January 11. During the National Anthem, Sasha snapped this photo of Daniella standing behind her father, saluting.

It turned out to be a photo that spoke volumes about the sacrifice of service members and their families. On January 29th Sasha and Daniella appeared on HLN’s Morning Express with Robin Meade during a “Salute to the Troops” segment, in which family members and friends send audio greetings to their deployed loved ones. Shortly after the airing, the U.S. Army's official Facebook page posted the photo, which received over 20,000 “likes” and over 2,000 shares in under 24 hours. The U.S. Army Chief of Chaplains’ office emailed the HLN link to all senior chaplain spouses nationwide as a form of encouragement to them and others. Then on February 8, the photo ran on NBC's Nightly News with Brian Williams. Daniella’s recognition has continued. On February 22 she received a letter from Congressman Bill Owens commending her for her “bravery and patriotism.”

Sasha served in the Gordon Admissions Office until 2007, while also completing her graduate degree at Salem State College. Dan completed his M.Div. at Gordon-Conwell, then served as Student Ministries Pastor at Fishkill Baptist Church in Fishkill, New York for four years before accepting the call to active duty Army Chaplain in the spring of 2011. He is currently deployed to Afghanistan.
