Reading about a missions conference at Gordon brought back memories of my own time there. It sounds so much like the olden days!
This past January I took a day trip to Sebring, Florida to meet with my long-ago friend and classmate, Alberta Simms ’43, and her sister Martha Simms ’59. They are living in the Sudan Retirement Village there. Alberta and I graduated from what was then called Gordon College of Theology and Missions. We were a small class, but united by our sense of having been called to the service of the Lord. We often were inspired by chapel speakers and by regular meetings of the Student Mission Fellowship. When I look at this photo I can realize how the years have flown!
Although I was not Italian by birth, starting with my student work at Boston Baptist Bethel and on to bilingual Italian Baptist churches in Brooklyn and the Bronx, I became Italian by marriage and years of living in Italian culture. Alberta has been finely honed by years in the hot African climate (Alberta became interested in working for the SIM* through a missions conference held at the Park Street Congregational Church in Boston). I pray that some of today’s Gordon students may also feel the call to missionary service.
