Gordon's Annual Day of Prayer

WENHAM, MA—Tuesday, November 6, the Gordon College community will join together for a day of reflection and refocus through various expressions of prayer.

This year's theme for the annual Day of Prayer is "Seek." The day will include opportunities to present requests before the Lord, acknowledge our dependence, look for his provision and offer praise.

Preparations for the Day of Prayer begin Monday evening, November 5, with floor fellowships at 8 p.m. and a special Catacombs service at 9:15 p.m.

As the Day of Prayer begins the next morning, a range of traditions and prayer styles will be available—opening students to new experiences while also providing opportunity to share their own. "I hope students will pray in a tradition that is not familiar to them," said Abram Kielsmeier-Jones, director of Christian Life and Worship. "I hope students will overwhelm the chapel with voices of prayer and praise and that our community will have a sense of God's presence and blessing as a by-product of their prayers."

As the morning unfolds, one event in particular—"Seek the Lord," the morning's all-campus service of song and prayer at 10:30 a.m.—will provide the first large-scale campus gathering of the day and will represent a range of worship traditions.There are more than 40 denominations and Christian traditions represented at Gordon College. "We are one and we are many," Kielsmeier-Jones says. "On the Day of Prayer we pray as one body—and we pray in diverse ways."

The focus on God's Kingdom through community prayer brings lectures, labs, examinations and athletic games—all vibrant threads of the academic life of Gordon—to a pause for an annual day of grace, discovery and time to be thankful as a community of believers.

Though prayer and worship is at the core of a Gordon education, the Day of Prayer sets aside intentional time as a community in unique ways. This year, the culminating worship event, a Psalmfest called "Draw Near," will be open to those outside the Gordon community as well. Friends from nearby Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary and Harvard Divinity School; area youth pastors and teen outreach programs like Young Life North Shore; interested students at Salem State University, Endicott College and Merrimack College—all are welcome.

The Psalmfest will close the day of prayer at 7 p.m. in the R. Judson and Janice Carlberg Worship Center in the A. J. Gordon Memorial Chapel and will feature worship led by Gordon student praise bands, vocal and instrumental ensembles, the Gospel Choir, and others.
