A School Takes Flight

When her daughter worked for Syracuse’s parks and recreation program in the summer of 2002, Anna (Biegler) Shipe ’74B noticed that the children at McKinley Park stayed at the local pools from open to close—so she held Bible clubs, arts and crafts workshops, and story times. A group of children from that summer formed the core group of a Bible Club that continued on at a local church throughout the school year.

A social work major and elementary education minor at Barrington, Anna has made it her life’s work to serve children. As the Bible Club grew, It became increasingly apparent that the more time spent with children, the greater the impact in their lives. In time the Club included tutoring, life skills, special activities, specialty camps and committed prayer partners.

This growth led Anna and others to start a school, Eagle Wings Academy, which opened its doors in September 2008 with students in 1st through 9th grades.

The school’s vision is to “help free children from spiritual, emotional, social, academic, and economic bonds so that they can be well-equipped servants of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, and be able to compete on equal footing with their peers from more advantaged settings.”
