Wednesday, April 25, Gordon senior Kyleen Burke had the opportunity to represent Gordon College at a symposium on interfaith cooperation at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. The event was organized to mark the completion of the President’s Interfaith and Community Service Campus Challenge, a White House initiative under the Department of Education. Both Georgetown and Gordon have been among the 250 campuses participating in the President’s Challenge this year.
Kyleen was one of four students invited to share the successes of interfaith work on her campus, along with students from Syracuse University, George Washington University, and Georgetown. The keynote address was delivered by Eboo Patel, the founder and president of the Interfaith Youth Core. He applauded a successful year of interfaith cooperation at schools like Georgetown and Gordon, and encouraged students to inspire others to join the interfaith movement.
Gordon’s project, “Loving Our Religious Neighbors,” approaches interfaith work from a uniquely Christian perspective. Gordon students have formed a partnership with area groups like the Harvard Interfaith Council and seek to continue to bring interfaith education and engagement to Gordon’s campus in the years to come.
The symposium was hosted by the Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs, directed by Dr. Thomas Banchoff. Georgetown President Dr. John J. DeGioia also spoke in encouragement of the interfaith work at Georgetown so far.
