WENHAM, MA - Dr. Susannah Heschel, author and Eli Black Associate Professor of Jewish Studies at Dartmouth College, will speak on Wednesday, April 5 at 10:25 a.m. at Gordon College. Her first lecture, My Father Abraham: Reflections on the Life and Thought of Abraham Joshua Heschel will be held in the A. J. Gordon Memorial Chapel. A reception for Dr. Heschel will take place at 4 p.m. followed by a second address, titled Four Who Entered Paradise: Modern Jews and the Enticement of Islam, in the Presidents Dining Room of the Lane Student Center at 4:30 p.m.
Dr. Susannah Heschel is the daughter of the late Abraham Joshua Heschel, considered by many to be one of the most significant Jewish theologians of the 20th century. She received her Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Pennsylvania in 1989, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from Colorado College in 2005. Her scholarship focuses on Jewish-Christian relations in Germany during the 19th and 20th centuries, and her numerous publications include a prize-winning monograph, Abraham Geiger and the Jewish Jesus, which won a National Jewish Book Award, and a forthcoming book, The Aryan Jesus: Christians, Nazis and the Bible. Heschel has also edited several volumes, most recently, Betrayal: German Churches and the Holocaust, with Robert P. Ericksen, and Insider/Outsider: American Jews and Multiculturalism, with David Biale and Michael Galchinsky. She has written extensively on feminism and Judaism.
Several years ago Heschel published a volume of her father's writings, Moral Grandeur and Spiritual Audacity: Essays of Abraham Joshua Heschel, with a biographical introduction. She has also written extensively on feminist issues related to Jewish Studies and edited a classic collection, On Being a Jewish Feminist, first published in 1983.
In addition to her academic work, she has written and lectured frequently on Jewish issues, served for several years as the co-chair of Tikkun, with Michael Lerner and Cornel West, sits on the advisory board of Brit Tzedek v'Shalom, and is an enthusiastic member of the National Council of Jewish Women.
This lecture is part of the Lilly Endowment initiative-Critical Loyalty: Faith Seeking Understanding Lecture Series at Gordon College. The lecture series is free and open to the public.
