Peter Stine, professor emeritus of English, passed away August 5 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following a short illness. He was 72.
A graduate of Asbury College, Northwestern University and Michigan State University, Peter served for 40 years on the Gordon faculty, from 1968 until his retirement in 2008. Along with his duties at Gordon, Peter often preached and ministered at local churches, and he served as the pastor of the First Baptist Church in Danvers for nearly two decades.

Everyone who met Peter immediately discovered his zest for literature, theatre and travel. For years he led the Princemere Readers Theatre Troupe at Gordon, which toured schools and churches both domestically and abroad. He loved relating literature to place and enjoyed introducing students to New England literary sites in Concord, Salem and Danvers. He travelled broadly and gave generously of his time and resources to support international students and missions.
As an actor, Peter appeared occasionally in Gordon plays and often performed one-man shows, including roles as Adoniram Judson and as A. J. Gordon. His former colleague Marvin Wilson, professor of biblical and theological studies at Gordon, says, “Those who knew Peter best quickly cut through his rather brusque, stern and intimidating exterior, and found a soft teddy bear with a warm heart. Always a character and actor in personality, Peter possessed a well-read and bright mind, filled with intellectual gems, literary commentary and travel tales of great diversity. A professor, pastor, rhetorician and athlete of extraordinary talent, Peter lived life to the hilt. And he enjoyed every minute of it.”
Calling hours will be 4–7 p.m. Thursday and Friday, August 11 and 12, at Peterson-O’Donnell Funeral Home, 167 Maple Street, Danvers, Massachusetts. The funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 13, in the A. J. Gordon Memorial Chapel on the Gordon College campus (255 Grapevine Road, Wenham, Massachusetts), with collation to follow.
