Rick Sweeney '85 Appointed New Vice President of Marketing and Strategic Communications

WENHAM, MA—This past October, Rick Sweeney returned to Gordon College to celebrate his 25th Homecoming reunion. As of November 15, Sweeney made a permanent return to campus as vice president of marketing and strategic communications.

Gordon College President R. Judson Carlberg, who announced Sweeney’s appointment in early November, said Sweeney’s primary role will be to oversee the College’s integrated marketing strategies for Gordon’s nationally recognized student programs, academic disciplines and institutional distinctions.

Currently a resident of Franklin, Massachusetts, the 1985 graduate majored in English at Gordon, earned a Master of Science in Mass Communication from Boston University, and most recently worked as executive director of advancement communications and marketing at Boston College. Before that he served at Cornell University as the director of marketing and communications for the Johnson Graduate School of Management.

“Rick returns to Gordon College with a wealth of experience in both marketing and communications,” said President Carlberg, who will be retiring in June 2011 after 19 years as president. “With his academic and professional track record, Rick has the qualifications Gordon needs for this role. I’m looking forward to working with him this year as we prepare for the next phase in Gordon’s success.”

With more than 18 years experience managing award-winning marketing and communications programs in higher education, Sweeney brings creative vision and leadership to the new position. In addition to being an alumnus, he also served as the director of communications for six years at Gordon before continuing his career at Cornell, Boston College and as an independent marketing and communications consultant. He has led branding and strategic marketing initiatives in print, media and online, and his video projects at Cornell earned a gold Davey Award in 2007 and a Telly Award in 2004.
