WENHAM, MA—Stomp. Singing. Stories. And cans of food? They’re all part of Gordon College’s second annual benefit variety show, 255 Grapevine: An Evening with an Address and a Certain Zip. The show once again welcomes North Shore neighbors for an evening of family fun and live entertainment with a unique admission price: Pay what you can, or pay with a can—of food, that is.
The benefit show takes place during Gordon’s Homecoming Weekend, Saturday, October 9, at 7:30 p.m. in the A. J. Gordon Memorial Chapel, and is open to the public. While last year’s event collected over 500 cans that were donated to local food pantries, this year’s organizers hope to double that and donate all proceeds to the Acord Food Pantry in Hamilton, Massachusetts.
“This is a fun evening that celebrates the community spirit and sacred calling that’s defined our campus in Wenham for more than 50 years,” said mistress of ceremonies Jan Carlberg, wife of Gordon’s President R. Judson Carlberg, who recently announced his retirement in June 2011. “The show is also a wonderful opportunity to remember those in our community who might need both a few laughs and a few cans of food. We appreciate the service our local food pantries provide all year round and wanted to give—no pun intended—what we can.”
The show includes 90 minutes of music, comedy and storytelling. The program draws both professional and amateur talent from every corner of campus with acts ranging from stomp dance, Broadway parodies and country western songs to classical piano and original storytelling. It will even include musical commercials from the cast of Gordon’s upcoming production of Into the Woods as well as some light-hearted tributes to the Carlbergs and A. J. Gordon (the founder of the College) himself.
“This show is timely on so many levels; it has enough zip to keep you having fun and enough inspiration to keep you warm,” said Norman Jones, professor of theatre arts and director of 255 Grapevine. “The performances come in many shapes, styles and sounds with some audience participation and some surprises. It’s a great way to spend a Saturday night and a great cause to support.”
