THE DEPARTMENT OF ENGLISH

COURSE OF STUDY
To begin the study of English you will take Introduction to the Study of Language and Literature, and then choose among courses in:
(40 credits total)

  • British and American literature
  • Comparative literature*
  • Rhetoric**
  • Theory**
  • Composition**

*For those qualified, courses taught in a second language will also fulfill the comparative literature requirement.
**You may also choose to use journalism courses to fulfill rhetoric, theory and composition requirements.

Literature classes are conducted chiefly through discussion, journaling and research projects. Students can also choose guided and independent studies to work closely with professors in specific fields of interest. Double majors are easily attainable and allow students to team their work in English with other significant interests.

CREATIVE WRITING
Writing courses are conducted as workshop seminars in advanced composition and creative writing. Students study the rhetorical principles of the composing process and apply them to their own work.

THE GLOBAL EXPERIENCE
Time to pack your bags and books…You can choose among many semester, year, short-term or summer abroad programs around the globe through the Global Education Office (GEO). Tuition for the programs is the same as a regular semester or year on campus. Check out some of the many opportunities:
