2. Seminar on The Economics of Global Poverty

Chrisopher Barrett (Cornell University) will be leading a seminar for Christian scholars on "The Economics of Global Poverty," which will take place at Calvin College, from July 9th - 12th, 2012.

Further information is available here.

Description:

This project aims to cultivate a community of talented young economics researchers working on different aspects of the economics of global poverty. The emphasis will be on empirical work using primary and secondary (experimental or observational) data on individuals, households, firms and communities, but with a firm theoretical grounding. The project objectives are several. At the individual level, we aim: to help develop the participating scholars’ individual technical skills, to accelerate their professional development and expand their professional network, and to enhance the visibility of their work. At a collective level, we aspire to help foster a community of scholars and teachers informed by the Gospels and committed to rigorous innovation within the discipline and within the broader Christian community. The team will meet for two 3-day workshops at Calvin College in successive summers (2012 and 2013) to discuss in depth each other’s draft papers and to explore opportunities for collaborative research within the team. The fruits of the project will be presented at a conference in Seattle the third summer (2014) and edited into a special journal issue, a book, or both.

Target applicants will have completed a Ph.D. in economics, agricultural and resource economics, public policy or a closely related discipline within the previous ten years or be ABD and expecting to complete their degree within a year or so. They will have a primary focus in empirical development economics and a personal Christian faith commitment.

Participants will receive a $1000 research grant, housing, meals, and a substantial travel allowance.

Application deadline: February 10th, 2012. (Note the Deadline Extension)
